Last week we went to Göteborg. To go there, we took a ship at Frederikshavn.
First of all, I'll tell you about Göteborg history.
During Middle Age, there was two previous towns upstream the Göta Älv River. It was Lödöse and Nya Lödöse two medieval towns with the same function as Göteborg (west Swedish harbour). But Göteborg was built in the XVIIth century by the Swedish King Charles IX and it's the only Swedish maritime access on the Kattegat. But when the Kalmar war broke out in 1611, Danishs and Norvegians destroyed the town, Sweden lost her maritime access on the Kattegat. That's why in 1649 the King Gustave II Adolphe built a new city at the same place. The first inhabitants were Dutch then Scottish and German. The city evolved quickly thanks to free tax, freedom of worship. Despite a clayey soil, battlement, canals and street were built. We can see geometrical street (Dutch architectural style). In 1731 the Svenska Ostindiska Compagniet was founded. The tea, porcelain and silk trading enriched the city and trades people. During the end of the XVIIIth century.Small anecdote:in the old company building there is the Göteborg city musem which we visited. Due to Napoléon continental blockade there was an improvement of British traders coming. Later, parks replaced bulwarks such as Kungsparken and Trädgårdsföreningens Park. Then, the city grew quickly and canal were filled. In 1832, a transatlantic connexion was created and the Göta canal construction with railway improve the city development. Göteborg became a dynamic town focuses on shipbuilding and maritime transport.
Now Göteborg is the first Scandinavian harbour, the 5th scandinavian town and the largest town which isn't a capital.
With 484,551 inhabitants in 2005 (source: SCB), this dynamic town has a strategic localisation: 98 km from Frederikshavn by ferry, Stockholm 470 km ; Copenhague 300 km and Oslo 260 km,
We visited many musem such as the Universeum, Maritima Centrum, Museum of Fine Art (Goteborgs Konstmuseum), and the City Museum. Some are free for young people.
I regret not visited Aerosum musem with militar plane and simulators because it's far from the downtown .
I recommend four streets:
Andra Långgatan (the thirst street to go out during the night but the atmosphere is less good than Jomfru Ane Gade)
Linnégatan (the most Gôteborg beautiful street)
Vasagatan and Avenyn
Here is our presentation video: you will find pictures inside.
Enjoy !
See you,
Nathan
