Jomfru Ane Gade

Jomfru Ane Gade (Virgin Anne's Street in English) is surely the most famous street in Aalborg and even the most famous street in throughout Denmark!  Also called “Gaden” (The street) is famous for being the street with most clubs, cafes and restaurants in the Nordic countries.

During the day you will find delicious restaurants with moderate prices.

The story began in at the end of the XVIth century. At first, it was a native seller street. According to believes, the name emanate from a nun: Ane Viffert who lived on Skavegade a near street.

This heritage allow to visit period houses in wood. Late after the first restaurant, the Gaslight was opened on May 1967. Now there are a lot of restaurants, bar and night club along the 150 meters of the street.

This street is desert on sunday morning (look photos below).

But on Friday or Saturday evening from 9:00 pm there is a lot of incoming people.

Prices of restaurants, cafe and bars are inexpensive due to competition between them. This competition has been raging for a long time ago.

For the Valentine's Day, we went with Angers students  to Studenterhuset a bar managed by students  which explains the low prices.

After, we went to Jomfru Ane Gade in Zwei Grosse Bierbar that allows us to meet other students and have a good time.

See you soon,

Transport

Aalborg is a town which has an airport and a station. Thanks to low cost companies you can come there quickly. The main airlines are: KLM, Lufthansa or Norwegian.
But there is a connection before arriving in Aalborg. You can stop, for example, in Amsterdam Airport with KLM or in Copenhagen with Norwegian.

Expect about 286 € from Marseilles and 236 € from Paris (return and luggage included)

Upon arrival, if you want travel, this airport serves Amsterdam, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Istanbul.

You can also use the train because there is the Hamburg-Aalborg link. The journey between Hamburg and Aalborg takes 6h17 and costs about 107 €. You need to add the High speed train and the Thalys journey to go to Hamburg.

Furthermore, Aalborg station allows you to go to other large towns such as Odense, Aarhus, and Copenhagen.

Then, for the braves they can use their car but from Grasse there are just over 1900 km and over 18 hours for the way!

In order to do small distances, the bike is interesting because overall  Denmark  is a flat country and the streets are bicycle-friendly.

There are several bus lines that go to downtown. It's work by area and it's 22 DKK (2.95€) per area. To have reductions three travel cards exist. The most intersting is the Personal Card. With this card usable across the Country, you have your own credit, a degressive price and it's valid for train and bus (I also refer you to my Tips and Tricks article to have more information about these cards).

Finally, you have ferry if you want travel to Norway, and Sweden.

Departures to these Countries are Frederikshavn and Hirtshals

Moving in Denmark is easy !

See you soon,

UCN parties

Well,

now I'm going to start the most interesting subject for an hard working student,

how are the parties in Aalborg ?

Get ready to be agape!

Foremost you will have a party organized by UCN with DJs, table football, videogames, pinball machine, beer and an after party in Jom Fru Ane Gade. And the best : everything is free! (Except for bar consumption)

Justine with Angers and foreign students

After this party, Justine went back home whereas I went to Jom Fru Ane Gade street (I also refer you to my Jom Fru Ane Gade article). We went in a bar reserved by UCN Student Union with 1 free beer. The atmosphere was ardent ! A lot of people was in this street, ordinary for a friday evening.

The bar was full of UCN sutdents. Afterward I drank a beer (may be a Carlsberg) and the time has gone by very quickly so I went back home by bus with two other Angers student with the bus.

This party was the occasion to meet other foreign student, and to speak English (in spite of the noise !). And it was a convivial and festive party I hope there will have other parties soon like this one !

Tips and Tricks

Hello everybody !

I'll show you all tips and tricks when you'll arrive on the spot.
First of all, you should find an accommodation. Justine and I were looking for each in our own way.
We finally obtained rooms at the same place in UC House thank to the solidarity between students. Justine used the Facebook group called "Roommate in Aalborg" and a student replied because she returned her room. In my case, I had my room thanks to an acquaintance because he went in placement.
UC House is an establishment which houses few Danish and many foreign students. The rent of my room is 2400 DKK (322, 56 €), with this price, I have 1 desktop, 2 beds, 1 fridge and a toilet. Justine pays 2600 DKK (349, 37 €) but she has an extra shower. Kitchens are mutual that allows speak with foreign students.
You could find more information on these links:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/115494521840868/
https://www.airbnb.com/
http://www.findroommate.dk/

If you obtained UC House, upon arrival you will should take the bus 2A, 2B or 2B from Aalborg airport and get off at Aalborg Busterminal and take the bus 1K or 1L, 1M, 1P, 1J or 16 to get off at Dyrskuevej.  UC house is near this bus stop.

To run errands the major shops are: Lidl, Fatka, Netto and Bilka (the only of hypermarket chain in Denmark). There is more choice in Bilka because it's the biggest shop in Aalborg but be careful: in Denmark dairy products are much taxed or not easy to find but you will find the essential in Bilka.

Fona looks like Virgin or Fnac

After few days, you should do your transport card to have reductions. In example, a the bus ride between UC House - Aalborg Busterminal costs 22 DKK (2.95 €) and 47 DKK (6.31€) during the night without the card.

In order to do your card, you must go to Aalborg Busterminal (bus number 1 or 16) and to go to the ticket office near Busterminal stop. And you should bring two ID for the registration.

Below, this is the Aalborg Bus map (you can zoom on it).

You have 3 types of card: the Personal card (free) available in all Denmark with reductions and a tapering price (interesting if you want travel outside Aalborg), the Flex Card which costs 380 DKK  per month (51.04€) you would have the bus free for 2 areas and during the night the transportation would cost 22 DKK (2.95€). The Anonymous Card isn't interesting because it's without discount.

I hope these tips and tricks will help future ESAIP students.

See you later

Nathan.
